Seattle Seahawks

Defense/Special Teams • Seahawks

Boom

The Seattle defense ranked eighth in fantasy scoring last season and has been a historically reliable unit for fantasy owners, finishing in the top 10 in six of the last seven seasons. The Seahawks ranked sixth against the pass in 2017 and finished a respectable 14th against the run. The magnificent S combo of Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor is starting to age, but Chancellor’s NFL future was in jeopardy at presstime because of a neck injury. Bobby Wagner is still arguably the best interior linebacker in the game, and LB K.J. Wright is a plus defender.

Bust

The Seahawks’ long reign as one of the NFL’s best defensive teams appears to be ending. Richard Sherman, who’s been one of the NFL’s best cover men for years, was released and signed with the 49ers. The departures of Sherman and DeShawn Shead leave major questions at cornerback. The defensive line is also a major area of concern following the departure of stalwart DE Michael Bennett.

Bottom Line

It was a nice run, but the Seattle defense can no longer be counted on to consistently smother opposing offenses. Maybe head coach Pete Carroll and new defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. can pull rabbits out of their hats, but at least on paper, this is no longer a special defense.
