Boom

Cousins was seventh last season in passing yards with 4,093. His 27 touchdown passes ranked eighth. It was his third consecutive season with at least 4,000 yards and 25 passing TDs. The Vikings signed Cousins in free agency to a fully guaranteed, three-year, $84-million deal. Cousins is (for now) the highest-paid player, per season, in the NFL. (Bet you never thought you’d read that sentence!) Last season, Cousins’ top targets in Washington were Jamison Crowder and Ryan Grant. He will enjoy a significant talent upgrade in Minnesota. He’ll be throwing the ball to Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen and Kyle Rudolph. The Vikings should be getting Dalvin Cook back, which should create opportunities on the ground and in the air. Cousins has played all 16 games for three consecutive seasons. Although he’s not the first image that springs to mind when thinking “running quarterback,” Cousins has scored 13 rushing touchdowns in the last three seasons.

Bust

Cousins’ passing yardage fell from 4,917 in 2016 to 4,093 last year -- a decline of 17 percent. When a quarterback moves to a new team, even one as good as the Vikings, there is always the possibility it won’t work out. Cousins is changing teams for the first time in his seven seasons. Minnesota has a new offensive coordinator in John DeFilippo. The entire team will have to go through an adjustment period before it is up to speed in a new system.

Bottom Line

Cousins spends as much time preparing and watching tape as any quarterback in the NFL. It’s hard to imagine this being a disaster, or even a disappointment. On the other hand, the Vikings are built around a stout defense and a balanced offense. Their new QB is unlikely to rewrite the record books. We would not be surprised by something along the lines of 4,000 passing yards and 28 TDs, with a couple of rushing touchdowns. Cousins is a solid fantasy QB. He is ideal for owners preferring to address WR and RB before grabbing a QB.
