Strong Points: Effective edge rusher -- uses his hands and redirects and can rush with power. Plays hard every down. Flexibility to dip and get under defenders. Good-to-very good athleticism -- speed, burst, bend and change of direction.
Weak Points: Marginal height. Are his arms long enough? Not as effective vs. the run as going after quarterbacks. Inflated sack production -- 7 of 9 sacks came in two games (Wake Forest and Louisville)
The Way We See It: Ray lined up both on the right and left sides of the formation, flashing excellent snap reaction and get-off quickness. He knows how to use his hands, keeping blockers off his body and getting underneath his opponent to generate pressure. Though he flashes vs. the run, Ray is inconsistent, tied up at times but not losing track of the ball. He must add some upper-body strength and use his hands even better in this area. Ray chases in pursuit, catching plays from behind with speed and effort. He is better suited to be a 3-4 outside backer than a 4-3 end, as he's a bit more effective vs. the run while playing up on base downs, but he'll rusher the passer on sub downs. He'll be a backup early with a chance to start in the right scheme down the road.
