Strong Points: Very quick, sudden and fast. Extremely loose hips and a smooth turn. Strong off-man cover skills. Shows good mirror ability vs. short and long routes. Alert zone player with anticipation. No extra steps when closing. Plays ball well and has soft hands.
Weak Points: Very small frame -- no bulk, lacks strength and limited growth potential. He will hit but doesn't consistently wrap and misses some tackles. Seldom see him trying to jam receivers. With two years of eligibility remaining, is he physically ready for the NFL? Missed seven games in 2017 with injury.
The Way We See It: A productive but small corner, Murphy redshirted as a true freshman then started six games in 2017, missing seven others in the middle of the season with a broken foot. He started every game last season, displaying strong cover ability. He plays tight man coverage and reacts to the ball very well, performing similarly in zone and off. We almost never saw him try and jam a receiver and press, which might be because he lacks the size and power. Murphy is inconsistent in his effort and production supporting the run, coming up aggressively in some games but not others. He misses tackles because of his technique. Murphy's size might limit him to the slot in pros, where his suddeness and overall coverage skills can make him a good slot corner. I wish he were bigger.
