Reigning NFC Special Teams Player of the Week Eddy Pineiro suffered what the Bears are calling a minor knee injury in the weight room and is listed as questionable for Monday night against Washington.
“I don’t think so," coach Matt Nagy said of his concern that Pineiro won't be able to play. "But I think what we’ve got to do as these days go by, let’s just see where he’s at. I’m going to be on the cautious side with him and we’ll just kind of feel out the pain part and if it’s something that’s going to affect him, then we’ll have a decision to make. If not … hopefully he’ll be OK.”
After not kicking in Friday's practice, Pineiro experienced some discomfort Saturday. The first-year kicker has converted his first four field goals, including a 53-yard game-winner at the buzzer in Denver last Sunday bailing out the Bears from an 0-2 start and sending a signal of early optimism that the Bears finally stabilized their wobbliest position since the unceremonious exits of Cody Parkey in March and franchise scoring leader Robbie Gould prior to the 2016 season.
"Just thought that it was something that was minor and I think as the time has gone by and then going out there [Saturday], he just felt it a little bit," Nagy said. "So we’re just going to pull back and see where it’s at and be optimistic and try to do everything we can to make sure that we’re taking care of it, the pain.”
The Bears could use P Pat O'Donnell in kicking situations if Pineiro is unable to play Monday.
Pineiro, whom the Bears acquired in May from the Raiders in exchange for a 2021 conditional seventh-round draft pick, was poised to be the Raiders kicker as an undrafted rookie a season ago prior to suffering a preseason groin injury that landed him on season-ending injured reserve.
The Bears also listed safety Eddie Jackson (shoulder), guard Kyle Long (hip) and Trey Burton (groin) as questionable, while Bilal Nichols was already ruled out after breaking his hand in Denver. Nose guard Eddie Goldman (oblique) practiced in full each of the past two days and was removed from the injury report.
