PLAYER NEWS
Blackburn, Chase (LB)
The agent for Chase Blackburn says the former New York Giants linebacker has agreed on a two-year contract with the Carolina Panthers. Financial terms weren't released. Richard Katz said Wednesday his client is "thrilled" to join the Panthers. Blackburn broke the news on Twitter, writing "Thanks for 8 great yrs (at)Giants. But it's time for the (hash)nextchapter (at)Panthers."
Blackburn has primarily been a special teams player during his eight seasons with the Giants, but started 15 games last season at middle linebacker and had 64 tackles, three sacks and one interception. It's unclear if Blackburn can break into a starting lineup in Carolina that includes AP Defensive Rookie of the Year Luke Kuechly, Jon Beason and Thomas Davis. Blackburn has played in 113 games during his career and stared 36.

Edwards, Dwan (DT)
The Panthers have announced they've re-signed Edwards.
Edwards started 14 games and posted a career-high six sacks last season with Carolina, third-most among NFL defensive tackles. He also had 52 tackles. The 31-year-old Edwards is expected to be a starter this season.

Gross, Jordan (T)
Gross says he's agreed to take a pay cut to remain with the Carolina Panthers.
Gross' new deal is worth $5.5 million in 2013 and will void out after the season, making him a free agent. That's significantly less than the 10-year veteran was scheduled to make the next two seasons. The two-time Pro Bowl selection was scheduled to earn $8.7 million this year and $6.7 million in 2014.

Ginn Jr., Ted (WR)
The Panthers have signed Ginn from the San Francisco 49ers. Carolina announced Friday that Ginn signed a one-year deal.
Carolina coach Ron Rivera says Ginn is "an explosive player who could help us both on offense and in the return game." The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Ginn played six seasons in the NFL as a receiver and return specialist, the last three with the 49ers. In 2012, Ginn played in 13 games and averaged 10.2 yards per return and 23 yards per kickoff return. He caught just two passes for 1 yard.

Mitchell, Mike (S)
The Panthers have signed Mitchell from the Oakland Raiders.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera says, "Mitchell should provide competition in the secondary and we know Captain is a tough, hard-nosed competitor capable of making big plays." Mitchell joins the Panthers after playing the first four seasons of his career with the Raiders. He has nine career starts.
