The sixth-year player spent the past two seasons in Arizona, where injuries hampered his opportunity to prove himself as a starter. He was cut by the Cardinals last month in a salary-cap saving move. In Buffalo, he gets the opportunity to compete for the starting job with Tarvaris Jackson. The Bills are in need of a starter after Ryan Fitzpatrick was released last month.

Listed at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, Lawson played the past two seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent his first five seasons with San Francisco, after the 49ers selected him in the first round in the draft. Lawson had 47 tackles and two sacks in 16 games, including 10 starts, last season. In making the move Friday, the Bills have essentially offered Byrd a one-year contract worth $6.9 million. Byrd isn't required to accept the offer, and he's also not prevented from negotiating with other teams. The Bills, however, will have the right to match any offers made to Byrd.
