The Panthers released DT Ron Edwards on Friday, the team confirmed.

"We appreciate the contributions that Ron has made to the Panthers the past two seasons," head coach Ron Rivera said in the team’s release. "He set a great example on and off the field for our young players, and we wish him well moving forward."

Edwards joined the Panthers in 2011, but missed the entire season with a torn right triceps suffered in his first practice at training camp.

In 2012, Edwards started the first 11 games of the season and recorded 16 tackles and one sack. He finished the year on injured reserve with a dislocated left elbow.

Edwards, who will be 34 in July, was with the Chiefs from 2006-10 and started his career with the Bills in 2001. According to Adam Caplan of The Sideline View, the move saves $1.67 million in cap space for Carolina.
