The Bills announced on Friday that they have re-signed QB Tarvaris Jackson, who was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next month. New head coach Doug Marrone also revealed that he will hold an open competition under center between Jackson and incumbent starter Ryan Fitzpatrick.

"I spoke with Ryan and Tarvaris and told them we will have an open competition at the quarterback position — similar to what we will do at all positions," Marrone said, according to a transcript provided by the club. "I believe that our players will embrace this challenge."

Jackson, acquired in a trade from Seattle last August, did not see the field in 2012, when he was the third-string QB behind Fitzpatrick and Tyler Thigpen. However, he has started 34 career games in seven seasons, compiling a 17-17 mark.

Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, has struggled to meet expectations since receiving a six-year, $59 million deal in October of 2011. In 55 games with the Bills, Fitzpatrick has thrown 80 TDs and 64 INTs, while compiling a 20-33 record as a starter.

Buffalo has also made no secret about its desire to draft a QB in April.
