With Ron Rivera’s status no longer in question — the Panthers announced Saturday that he will be returning as head coach in 2013 — owner Jerry Richardson will move into the next phase of his search for a new general manager next week.

The buzz around the league has been that Richardson and former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi, who is serving as a consultant to Richardson during the search, are looking for candidates with a strong background in scouting.

The Panthers reportedly have requested permission to interview two members of the Giants’ front office — senior pro personnel analyst Dave Gettleman and director of college scouting Marc Ross — and Vikings assistant GM George Paton. Sources say Titans V.P. of player personnel Lake Dawson also could be among those interviewed.

All four have spent their careers as NFL personnel evaluators.

However, another candidate rumored to be in the running for the job — Brandon Beane — is said to be under consideration even though his background is not in scouting.

He has been the Panthers’ director of football operations since 2008 and was promoted to interim GM when Marty Hurney — who mentored Beane — was fired in October. Beane could be a skillful salary-cap manager and coordinator of the different areas of football operations, but he would be a relative newcomer to the scouting aspect of the job.
