The Chargers are deep at linebacker, and it is arguably their strongest position. The emergence of fourth-year LB Larry English bolsters the group even more. The way we hear it, English was a bright spot in the preseason and the team likes English’s speed. He had received the “bust” label after back-to-back injury-plagued seasons. He played in only five games in 2011 and had seven tackles and two sacks. The 2009 first-rounder has seven sacks in 29 career games.
At outside linebacker, Shaun Phillips and Jarret Johnson are the Chargers’ starters, with pass rushers Antwan Barnes and Melvin Ingram as the backups, but English has played his way into the rotation opposite Ingram on passing downs. The pair could give opposing offensive tackles fits. The challenge for defensive coordinator John Pagano will be finding ways to get Ingram, Barnes and English all on the field, but with English being healthy and looking improved, it’s certainly a good problem for the Chargers’ defense to have.
