The Patriots added another tight end on Wednesday, signing ex-Ram Michael Hoomanawanui.
Hoomanawanui, a third-year pro, did not make the Rams’ final roster and had joined the Redskins' practice squad. He has played in eight games in each of his two NFL seasons.
In 2011, Hoomanawanui started all eight games he played and had seven catches for 83 yards. In 2010, he had 13 catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns. Last season, Hoomanwanui was with current Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
The Patriots also announced that TE Visanthe Shiancoe will be placed on injured reserve with a designation to return. The new injured reserve allows for teams to place one player on I.R. with a "major injury" who can be reactivated later in the season. Shiancoe will be available in eight weeks.
