The NFL suspended Chiefs OLB Tamba Hali for the first game of the regular season without pay for violating the league’s policy on substance abuse.

Hali will be eligible to return to the Chiefs’ roster on Sept. 10 following their season opener against the Falcons on Sept. 9. He is eligible to continue participating in preseason practices and games.

"Tamba’s situation is unfortunate," Chiefs GM Scott Pioli said. "Obviously, we are disappointed and will miss him during this suspension, but the NFL's policies are very clear and we respect the league's decision in this matter. We are unable to comment further on this matter or any aspect of the NFL’s Drug Policy.”

Hali is entering his seventh season with the Chiefs and has missed only one game in his career. Last season, Hali, whose base salary for 2012 is $11.25 million, started every game and made 66 tackles, 12 sacks and four forced fumbles. According to NFL.com’s Brian McIntyre, Hali’s suspension and fine will cost him over $1.3 million.
