Chargers WR Vincent Brown suffered a broken left ankle in the team's 28-20 preseason victory over the Cowboys Saturday night.
Brown, a second-year player out of San Diego State, was injured when his left foot got caught under a tackler as he made an 18-yard TD reception of a Charlie Whitehurst pass in the third quarter. He stayed down after the catch and was carted off the field.
After the game, head coach Norv Turner wouldn't comment on the severity of Brown's injury, but PFW Chargers correspondent Scott Bair, of the North County Times, reported Sunday that Brown will need surgery to repair the ankle.
Brown had been a standout in training camp and was expected to help pick up the slack in a WR corps that lost No. 1 WR Vincent Jackson in free agency. Free-agent additions Robert Meachem, Eddie Royal, Roscoe Parrish and Micheal Spurlock will now be counted even more than before.
A report from Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune said Brown is expected back for the second half of the regular season. He likely will not go on season-ending injured reserve and might be a candidate for the PUP list.
