Brian Daboll is the Chiefs’ sixth offensive coordinator in as many years, and yet he appears to already have made a definitive stamp on his new team one game into his tenure. The offense showed balance, control, precision, power and finesse in two fine scoring drives with the first-team unit against the Cardinals. We were reminded that Dexter McCluster has a role on this team, as he caught three passes for 45 yards. We were reminded that Peyton Hillis, who broke out under Daboll in Cleveland in 2010, hasn’t lost it either (10.3 yards per rush, plus an 11-yard TD reception). We learned that Matt Cassel still can read a defense, something it appeared he had lost previously. We learned that motion, varied personnel packages and play designs are a big part of the offense but that the goal is not as much deception as they are aimed at exploiting weaknesses and offering options. It was a strong debut for the new coordinator and his first-team offense, one that should have Chiefs fans excited.
