Chargers RB Ryan Mathews suffered a broken clavicle in Thursday’s preseason game against the Packers.
Head coach Norv Turner said after the game that Mathews would undergo surgery Friday, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune. He is expected to be out for 4-6 weeks. Mathews, a third-year pro, had one carry before leaving the game. He has missed six games in his two NFL seasons because of injuries.
The way we see it
The Chargers still have high expectations for Mathews — he may not miss much of the regular season — but this has to be very disappointing for the club. San Diego expects Mathews to be its workhorse and he may need some time to knock off the rust when he is able to play. Mathews' top backups, Ronnie Brown and Jackie Battle, could take on bigger workloads until Mathews returns.
