The Saints’ Charles Brown was viewed as a starting offensive tackle of the future when the team picked him in the second round of the 2010 draft. The club is waiting for him to meet expectations as he enters his third season.

Injuries have been an issue for Brown — he opened last year’s training camp on the PUP list as he recovered from offseason surgery to repair a herniated disc and then had his season cut short by a hip injury that landed him on injured reserve after eight games. He has appeared in only 11 games through two seasons, although he did see significant playing time for the first time in 2011, making five straight starts at right tackle while Zach Strief was out with a knee injury.

Brown struggled vs. the Rams during the Week Eight game in which he suffered his season-ending injury. He allowed four sacks and was penalized five times last season. Heading into camp, OLT Jermon Bushrod and Strief are entrenched as starters, so Brown is in line for backup duty. Bushrod is in the final year of his contract, and there could be an opening at left tackle in 2013 if he doesn't re-sign, but Brown has yet to show the Saints he deserves to be considered a viable replacement.
