The Texans would have preferred that LBs coach Reggie Herring never mentioned the club gaining back what it lost “and then some” by replacing former team captain DeMeco Ryans with Bradie James, but that doesn’t mean the club isn’t fired up about its new veteran inside ‘backer. Shortly after signing James, an unrestricted free agent, in early April, PFW heard there was no way James would take the starting job from Darryl Sharpton. Fast-forward two months and it would appear the job is now James’ to lose. While Sharpton (quad) might be the one Texan who isn’t back to full strength by training camp, James continues to earn rave reviews, we hear. In addition to being the most versed Texan in coordinator Wade Phillips’ defense, word is the Texans love the calming effect — once provided by Ryans — that James brings to the unit. One source wondered why James, who is expected to make all the calls in the middle of the Houston “D,” was deemed expendable in Dallas.
