Giants TE Jake Ballard, who had surgery to repair his torn ACL, also underwent microfracture surgery to repair cartilage, according to Jeff Roberts of the Bergen Record.

Ballard told Roberts that he tore his ACL on the field, and then the cartilage damage “probably happened on the sideline from trying to run with no ACL.”

“But I don’t regret trying to get back in the game,” said Ballard, who suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI. “It’s the biggest game in any football player’s career.”

Ballard had a breakout year for New York, catching 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games and 13 starts. Per the report, Ballard likely faces 8-9 months of rehabilitation for the ACL and another six weeks due to the microfracture surgery.

The second-year player is expected to begin the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list. TE Travis Beckum also tore his ACL in the Super Bowl, but is expected back. The Giants added former Cowboys TE Martellus Bennett this offseason.

The Giants did re-sign Ballard, who was an exclusive-rights free agent.
