The Redskins have re-signed veteran QB Rex Grossman to a one-year contract, Pro Football Talk reported Saturday evening, citing a league source.

Grossman, 31, is expected to be the mentor to Baylor QB Robert Griffin III, whom the team is expected to draft with the second overall selection. If Griffin isn't ready to start by Week One, then Grossman would get the call.

Before re-signing Grossman, the Redskins had an interest in free-agent QB Kyle Orton, the Washington Post reported, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, but Orton signed with the Cowboys.

Grossman began the 2011 season as the Redskins' starter, but he lost the job to John Beck for three games before regaining it for the rest of the season. Grossman had a 5-8 record as the starter, with a 72.4 passer rating, a 16-20 TD-to-interception ratio and eight fumbles, five of which he lost.

This marks the third one-year contract Grossman has signed with Washington. The team offered him a multiyear deal last offseason, according to the Post, but he turned it down. He played last season for an $810,000 salary.
