As expected, the Raiders informed OLB Kamerion Wimbley of his release on Friday.
Friday was the deadline for the Raiders to pay Wimbley his guaranteed salaries for 2012 ($4.5 million remaining), 2013 ($11 million) and 2014 ($2 million of his $10 million), according to Brian McIntyre of Football Outsiders.
The cut gives the Raiders $4.5 million of salary-cap space. Wimbley is still owed $6.5 million.
The sixth-year veteran joined the Raiders in 2010 after four seasons with the Browns. He had seven sacks last season, starting all 16 games. Wimbley has missed one game in his career and has 42½ sacks.
He is expected to be hotly pursued by several teams in need of a talented pass rusher.
