RB Doug Martin, #22
Boise State | Grade: 5.85
Ht: 5-9 1/4 | Wt: 223 | Sp: 4.49 | Arm: 30 1/2 | Hand: 9 | Wing: 72 3/4
Notes: Nicknamed the "Muscle Hamster" for his chubby cheeks and strength. Also lettered in track and field as a California prep. Redshirted in 2007 and earned Offensive Scout Player of the Year honors. Was recognized with the team's "Hammer" award for his physical special-teams play in '08 (11 games) — carried 24 times for 107 yards (4.5-yard average) and zero touchdowns, caught three balls for 54 yards (18.0) and zero touchdowns and returned 10 kickoffs for 223 yards (22.3). Pulled a hamstring in the season opener against Idaho State and missed two games. Doubled as a defensive player (nickel linebacker/safety) for three weeks at the beginning of '09 as the coaches sought a way to get him on the field before injuries at running back opened the door for increased carries. Totaled 129-765-15 (5.9) rushing, 8-68-0 (8.5) receiving and 6-178 (29.7) on kickoffs in '09. Was slowed by a hip injury vs. Hawaii. Atop the depth chart in '10, he started all 13 games and was the Broncos' leading rusher with 201-1,260-12 (6.3). Added 28-338-2 (12.1) receiving. Led Boise State in rushing again in '11 after piling up 263-1,299-16 (4.9) in 13 games (12 starts), culminating with a 301-all-purpose-yard Las Vegas Bowl MVP effort that included a game-opening 100-yard kickoff return. Also contributed 28-255-2 (9.1) receiving and 10-338-1 (33.8) as a kickoff returner. Missed almost two full games, including a start, with a sprained right ankle. Has eight career fumbles.
Positives: Thick, muscular build. Decisive in the hole — terrific vision, balance and instincts. Runs with determination — spins off contact, keeps legs churning and finishes. Outstanding playing temperament, urgency and effort. Hungry competitor. Good initial quickness and short-area burst. Runs out of ankle tackles. Can explode out of cuts and string moves together. Has speed to go the distance — sinks his hips and can open his stride in the clear. Cleanly catches and consistently makes plays in the screen game. Aggressive and effective in pass protection. Well-respected with rock-solid character. Loves football and takes care of his body. Excellent weight-room results and functional football-playing strength and explosion. Detail-oriented. Proven special-teams stalwart early in career with kickoff-return ability. Unselfish, team player with ingrained work habits and a likeable personality.
Negatives: Shows some tightness in his hips and can learn to be more crafty running routes. Average hip power to clear through the first wave. Has been nicked with hip, hamstring and ankle injuries, and his hard-charging running style could always invite injury. Was contained by Georgia and did not regularly face top competition.
Summary: A compactly built, energetic, turbocharged, complete back with starter-caliber traits, Martin can run inside and outside, over or around tacklers and is effective as a receiver and blocker. All-out mentality, sheer competitiveness and perfectionist traits will endear him to coaches and could drive up his draft value. Will play for 10 years and can produce on all downs and in multiple phases.
NFL projection: Top-50 pick.
