On Sunday, the Falcons lost to the Giants and were eliminated from the NFC playoffs. On Monday, the team lost their defensive coordinator to a different job.

Brian VanGorder has left the Falcons to become the defensive coordinator at Auburn University. The news was announced on Monday afternoon by head coach Mike Smith, and confirmed by the school to The Birmingham News.

VanGorder joined the Falcons in 2007 as the team's linebackers coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator the next season. Atlanta's defense finished 12th in the NFL in yards allowed and in the wild-card round loss to the Giants, the only points the Falcons scored were on a safety.

VanGorder was the University of Georgia's defensive coordinator from 2001-04.
