Prepped at Lexington (Ky.) Catholic where he won state championships in football (two) and track (100 meters and 4x100-meter relay) and played basketball. Was a reserve cornerback and special-teams player in 2008 (wore jersey No. 19), recording 11 tackles without a pass breakup or interception. Moved to free safety in ’09 and started 11-of-13 games, logging 60-5-0 with two tackles for loss and one sack. At strong safety in ’10, started 12-of-13 games and produced 106-2-3 with four tackles for loss. Was benched for the first quarter of the season opener against Louisville (violation of team rules). Started all 12 games in ’11 and posted 120-2-2 with a team-high 14 tackles for loss, 1 1⁄2 sacks and one forced fumble. Suffered a left shoulder AC joint sprain against Vanderbilt and played hurt against Georgia. Had 19 career kickoff returns for 475 yards (25.0-yard average).Positives:
Solidly built and has long arms to play off blocks. Quick to key and diagnose. Not afraid to get his nose dirty. Plays hard and gives effort in pursuit. Wrap tackler. Can run with tight ends. Has played corner and both safety spots and has special-teams experience.Negatives:
Needs to get stronger — thuds more than he strikes. Lacks bulk strength and power and gets outmuscled at the point of attack. Not an explosive athlete. Average speed and hip flex — range and ball skills are ordinary. Limited zone awareness. Focus drifts at times. Needs to adopt a more professional work ethic.Summary:
Durable, competitive, productive box safety who was used in a dual role in college, often playing like an additional linebacker. Could compete for a roster spot as a No. 4 safety and special-teams contributor.
