Native Alabaman appeared in one game as a true freshman in 2007 and saw reserve action in seven contests in ’08. Started all 27 games in 2009 and ’10 seasons combined. Missed ’10 spring practice while recovering from surgeries on both feet. Made all 13 starts at center for the national champions in ’11.Positives:
Good weight-room strength. Quick to snap and step. Has natural leverage. Understands angles and scraps to gain positioning. Fundamentally sound. Strong hands. Solid in pass protection — plays with a low base and can shuffle and slide in short area. Tough and competitive. Aware and intelligent — studies the game and makes line calls. Durable, experienced, three-year starter at a national-champion program. Outstanding football character — well-respected, hardworking leader.Negatives:
Does not look the part — lacks ideal height and has extremely short arms (affects his ability to sustain). Adequate athletic ability. Not an explosive mover. Is tight-hipped with limited agility (takes wide turns). Struggles adjusting in space. The farther he travels, the more he struggles. Gives ground vs. widebody nose tackles. Lacks power and finishing strength. Center only.Summary:
A squatty, strong, competitive, blue-collar pivot, Vlachos is a positional seal blocker with a concerning lack of length. However, his tape and intangibles give him the opportunity to earn a spot.
