First name is pronounced “VOHN-tez.” The California prep was the highest-ranked football prospect to ever sign a letter of intent to attend ASU after recording 289 tackles in his final two seasons. The Pac-10 Defensive Freshman of the Year appeared in all 12 games in 2009, starting the final nine at middle linebacker, and recorded 69 tackles, seven tackles for loss and two sacks with five pass breakups and two forced fumbles. Posted 90-81⁄2-0 with three pass breakups and two forced fumbles in ’10 after starting 11-of-12 contests in which he played at MLB spot. Did not start against Washington after head-butting Oregon State QB Ryan Katz and drawing a personal foul penalty. Led the Sun Devils in sacks in ’11 after posting 69-7-5 with three pass breakups and one interception in 13 games (12 starts — did not start MAACO Bowl). Was benched during the second half of the regular-season finale against California after two personal-foul penalties.Positives:
Good overall mass. Explosive straight-line striker capable of delivering some knockout, helmet-buckling shots. Good hip snap. Runs through contact and plays with physicality. Intense, confident and plays with emotion. Intimidating on-field presence.Negatives:
Misses too many tackles. Takes bad angles. Very undisciplined. Marginal cover skills. Poor Combine performance — appeared very stiff, upright and unprepared and clocked the worst 40 time of any linebacker at the Combine. Marginal work and practice habits. Quit on drills at the Combine. Questionable football intelligence. Non-leader. Points the finger and makes too many excuses. Publicly throws coaches under the bus. Locker-room lawyer. Takes foolish penalties. Immature with bad on-field body language. Racked up personal fouls with regularity. Can be difficult to coach and manage. Suspect character.Summary:
Vastly overhyped, marginal football player who already has been removed from many draft boards and easily could go undrafted after a poor Combine showing and because of the negative energy he can bring to a locker room. Overcame a rough upbringing to beat the odds in college but needs to mature mightily to survive in the pros and would benefit highly from a strong veteran presence who can stick him in his place.
