Prepped in New Jersey before spending his final semester of high school at the Harmony Community School in Cincinnati. Was academically ineligible in 2007. Appeared in seven games in ’08 and recorded nine tackles, half a tackle for loss and zero sacks with one forced fumble. Started all 25 games the next two seasons — totaled 59-8 1⁄2-3 1⁄2 in ’09 (13 games) and 94-18-12 with three passes batted down and two forced fumbles in ’10 (12 games). In ’11, led the team in tackles for loss and sacks after logging 77-22-11 with one batted pass, a Conference USA-best seven forced fumbles and three blocked kicks in 13 starts. Team captain. Medically excluded from bench-pressing at the Combine with a left wrist injury.Positives:
Quick get-off — gains a step, shortens the corner and closes fast. Shows some savvy to set up rush moves — uses his hands well and has a quick inside move. Good balance and movement skills. Clocked a 3-cone drill time of 6.93 seconds. Motor runs — chases hard in pursuit and ranges to make plays. Showed power at the Senior Bowl, getting underneath Florida State’s Zebrie Sanders and walking him back for a sack. Good game-day competitor. Strong wrap tackler. Highly productive.Negatives:
Average athleticism and flexibility off the edge. Raw instincts and undisciplined eyes — does not feel blocking pressure and is led astray by misdirection. Can be run at — not stout at the point. Did not show speed or explosion at the Combine — below-average timed speed, including the slowest 10-yard split (1.80 seconds) among defensive ends. Questionable conditioning. Requires simple assignments. Lacks experience locking horns with top-flight tackles.Summary:
Good, steady, productive football player who plays faster than he times and combines natural pass-rush ability with relentless effort. Has mental limitations, is at his best with his ears pinned back and should be paired with a patient, nurturing position coach to maximize his potential.
