The Mississippi prep signed with Jackson State out of high school but chose to attend Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Rushed 84 times for 555 yards (6.6-yard average) and 12 touchdowns in 11 contests as a freshman in 2008 and earned first-team All-America honors from the NJCAA in ’09 after tallying 297-1,728-22 (5.8) in 12 games. Despite leading the junior-college ranks in scoring, he was offered only two scholarships, from Mississippi State and Troy. Burst onto the scene for the Bulldogs in ’10, starting 10-of-12 games at running back, and producing 186-968-19 (5.2) and catching 10 passes for 106 yards (10.6-yard average) and one touchdown. Set school records for total touchdowns and rushing touchdowns. Did not play against UAB because of an ankle injury. Started all 12 games in ’11, rushing 193-1,189-10 (6.2) and catching 20-187-1 (9.4). Team captain. Named Music City Bowl MVP after rushing 14-180-2 vs. Wake Forest. Fumbled five times in 379 carries the past two seasons and has a 5.7-yard career rushing average.Positives:
Compactly built with solid muscle definition. Controlled mover with energetic feet. Good instincts, vision and patience. Effective inside runner — good pad level and forward lean. Squares himself, reads blocks and has enough lateral agility and short-area quickness to sidestep the first wave. Makes himself small in the hole and slippery. Fights for yards and finishes runs. Willing blocker. Terrific intangibles — character player with a professional work ethic.Negatives:
Average speed — will not make a living on the perimeter and is not a home run hitter. Shows some hip tightness. Lacks sheer lower-body strength to power through tackles. Was not used extensively as a receiver and needs work in this area — does not catch naturally and is a raw route runner. Could stand to improve technique and base strength in pass protection. Was a non-factor against top competition (see LSU, Georgia, Alabama).Summary:
A poor supporting cast affected his senior performance, but Ballard is a sturdy, competitive, productive back whose running style should translate well and enable him to be an effective between-the-tackles gainer in a man-blocking scheme. A big back who takes what is blocked for him.
