Notes: Last name is pronounced “may-ah-TUNG-gah.” The Hawaii prep redshirted in 2007. Appeared in all 14 games in ’08, making two starts at left defensive tackle, and recorded 10 tackles, 2 1⁄2 tackles for loss and 1 1⁄2 sacks. Played in 11 contests, starting eight at the DLT spot, and registered 15-2 1⁄2-1 in ’09. Missed two games with an ankle injury. Posted 32-2 1⁄2-1 with one forced fumble in ’10, making 12 starts at left defensive tackle and two at right defensive end. Made all 13 starts at DLT spot and logged 38-4-3 with one forced fumble in ’11. Team captain.
Positives:Moves very well for his size and plays with balance. Surprising foot athlete, indicated by Combine times in the 40, 10-yard split (1.66 seconds), short shuttle (4.25) and 3-cone drill (7.11). Competes in the trenches. Locates the ball. Functionally strong at the point of attack. Plays with leverage and works to disengage — flashes hand strength to tug off blocks. Works at his craft — motivated film junkie who puts the time in to improve. Solid personal and football character. Smart.
Negatives:Average length. Does not play as suddenly or explosively as workout numbers suggest (not a playmaker). Needs to improve hand use. Thick, stiff hips. Cannot range very far and struggles to adjust. Not very creative or powerful as a pass rusher (limited third-down utility). Played in rotation (average production).
Summary:Adequate-sized, competitive, functionally strong defensive tackle who nearly quit football after the death of his mother in 2007. Could compete for a roster spot as a depth player in a 4-3 alignment.
