Was the Gatorade Iowa Football Player of the Year as a senior, in addition to winning the state title in football and in track for the 400-meter dash. Redshirted in 2007. Appeared in all 13 games in ’08 as a backup, registering 12 tackles, zero tackles for loss and zero sacks. Recorded 7-0-0 in 13 games in ’09. Started all eight games in which he played in ’10, posting 42-4 1⁄2-0 with four pass breakups and one interception. Fractured a vertebrae in his neck and missed the last five games of the season. In ’11, he totaled 73-4-1 with one pass breakup and one forced fumble in 12 starts — the first five games at the “Leo” linebacker and seven of the next eight contests at MLB. Sustained a sprained ankle on the opening series of the Iowa State contest. Did not play against Indiana after having surgery on his left hand. Team captain. Was medically excluded from jumps at the Combine with a left ankle injury.Positives:
Good size, speed and leaping ability. Reads keys and triggers quickly. Strong hands to punch and jam tight ends off the line. Can set the edge in run support. Solid wrap tackler. Gets depth in zone drops, leverages routes and reacts alertly. Can turn and run vertical. Experienced lining up in space over the slot. Has a core special-teams makeup. Extremely smart, tough and hardworking.Negatives:
Has short arms and gets stuck on blocks. Has a thin lower body, moves hunch-backed and durability could be an issue given linear body build. Average athletic ability and playmaking ability. Hip tightness showed at Combine — not efficient changing direction. Struggles to break down in space. Average striking ability. Unsudden when required to redirect and accelerate. Has man-cover limitations — loses separation and cannot adjust easily.Summary:
Lean, defined, competitive, height-weight-speed prospect capable of nailing down a roster spot as a core special-teams player and as a versatile, swing backup for a 4-3 team. Must prove he can stay healthy.
