Notes: Was a four-star DT recruit as a Washington prep. Appeared in the last seven contests of the 2008 season as a true freshman, recording three tackles, zero tackles for loss and zero sacks. Saw action in 11 games as a backup and posted 13-4-1 with one forced fumble in ’09. Appeared in 11 games in ’10, starting the final four games of the season — one at nose guard and three at defensive end. Tallied 28-8 1⁄2-4 1⁄2. Started all 13 games at DE spot in ’11 and totaled 46-12-5 1⁄2 with two forced fumbles. Medically excluded from bench-pressing at the Combine with a left shoulder injury.
Positives:Stout and thickly built. Engages quickly off the snap. Plays with leverage and generates power through his base. Able to generate a surge. Has big, strong hands — brandishes a heavy six-inch punch to jolt blockers. Controls single blocks. Strong tackler (sells out to make plays). Revved-up motor — plays with consistent effort and urgency. Versatile — can play anywhere along the line. Solid personal and football character. Coachable and highly intelligent. Inspirational leader.
Negatives:Not sudden or explosive. Unrefined pass rusher — lacks a plan of attack. Average sack numbers. Inflexible to bend the edge — tight hips and stiff shoulders. Needs to improve hand use — can be slow to shed. Average range (minimal closing burst outside the box). Can play with better balance — is on the ground more than he should be. At times loses sight of the ball. Lets his pads rise when fatigue overtakes him.
Summary:Strong, physical, intense, competitive power rusher offering scheme versatility and a trench-warrior mentality. Has broad appeal and is capable of doing the dirty work as a 3-4 five-technique or sliding along an even front. A winning player who gives a team comfort knowing what it’s getting.
