Played tight end as a Texas prep. Appeared in 10 games, starting three, as a true freshman in 2008 (wore jersey No. 47), and tallied 23 tackles, 1 1⁄2 tackles for loss and zero sacks. Started all 27 games the next two seasons — totaled 40-6 1⁄2-5 1⁄2 with four batted passes and a blocked kick in ’09 (13 games) and 32-5 1⁄2-4 1⁄2 with two batted passes in ’10 (14 games). Played through a torn left labrum as a junior then had surgery on it spring ’11 after reinjuring the labrum. Led the Mustangs in sacks and forced fumbles from his DLE spot in ’11, racking up 44-9 1⁄2-8 with six forced fumbles in 13 starts.Positives:
Looks the part — lean, muscular physical specimen with very long arms and big hands. Carries his weight exceptionally well. Moves like a linebacker — natural bender with an athletic stride. Good balance and body control. Can redirect and accelerate. Flashes stack strength power potential. Very smart and accountable. Skill set projects to multiple schemes and positions. Has upside.Negatives:
Raw and inconsistent. Deficient eyes, instincts and feel. Does not play to his size. Lacks girth. Does not drop anchor and dig in vs. the run — gives ground to get off blocks (stays attached). Lacks a pass-rush plan of attack. Unthreatening take-off — short-steps off the snap. Sluggish hands — spends too much time grappling. Does not accelerate off blocks. Inconsistent tackler. Average motor. Does not live for football and motivation should be evaluated.Summary:
Raw, athletic, height-weight-speed flash player with untapped potential, though he could turn off some people with his low-key personality that diverges from the desired old-school, boilerplate football makeup. Gifted, fall-in-line soldier type who might be ignorant of his own ceiling, but warrants investment as a developmental project for a sculptor position coach.
