Dade County (Fla.) product who starred in football and basketball as a prep. Made an immediate impact as a true freshman in 2008 when he established single-season school records for receiving yards, yards per catch, all-purpose yards and tied for the most receiving touchdowns. Played all 12 games, drawing five starts, and amassed 41 receptions for 1,013 yards (24.7-yard average) and seven touchdowns with a 38-yard TD pass. Also returned 36 kickoffs for 841 yards (23.4) and one TD and 18 punts for 266 yards (14.8) and one TD. Started 8-of-12 games in ’09, totaling 57-632-5 (11.1) receiving, 22-633-1 (28.8) on kickoffs and 3-36 (12.0) on punts. Sprained his right knee against Western Kentucky. Was the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year and FIU’s leading receiver for the third consecutive season in ’10 when he caught 59-848-5 (14.4) with 29-833-2 (28.7) on kickoff returns and 20-126 (6.3) on punt returns. In ’11, he led the team once again in receiving after posting career receiving highs with 72-1,038-7 (14.4) in addition to 18-548-0 (30.4) on kickoff returns and 8-186-1 (23.2) on punt returns in 13 games (12 starts). Also has rushed 69 times in his career for 498 yards (7.2-yard average) and seven touchdowns. Has 12 career fumbles. Was medically excluded from the Combine for a left thigh injury.Positives:
Nifty feet. Flexible hips and ankles. Terrific short-area quickness. Sets up corners and is sudden to create separation. Catches in stride and can turn a short throw into a long gain. Agile and slippery to elude and create. Excellent leaping ability. Shows vision, burst and long speed as a return man. Smart, tough and confident. Solid character — well-respected, accountable and cares about the game.Negatives:
Undersized with short arms and small hands. Needs to bulk up. Limited functional strength to fend off the jam, battle in traffic and break tackles. Needs to sharpen his route running. Inconsistent hands. Marginal blocker. Durability is an issue — has been dinged up and is not built to withstand a pounding. Production is inflated by a spread system and mid-major competition. Must protect the ball better.Summary:
Small-framed, lean, quicker-than-fast slot receiver and return man with playmaking ability and run-after-catch skills. Smarts and versatility add to his value, though he will have to prove he can stay out of the trainer’s room and cut down on fumbling. Production dipped as a senior with shaky QB play.
