Notes:

Also participated in basketball and track and played running back as a Pennsylvania prep. Tore his left ACL in October of 2006 and walked on to the team and greyshirted. Redshirted in ’07. Broke his right thumb in the spring of ’08. Saw action in two games (FIU and South Florida) in ’08, making one tackle, no tackles for loss and zero sacks. Appeared in 10 contests as a backup and special-teams player in ’09 and recorded 9-1-1. Stepped into the starting lineup at weak-side linebacker in ’10, leading the team in tackles with 95-41⁄2-2 plus three pass breakups in 12 games. In ’11, led KU in tackles after posting 124-6-0 with two pass breakups, one interception and two forced fumbles in 12 starts at WLB. Team captain.

Positives:

Pursues hard sideline-to-sideline and generally takes proper angles. Plays on his feet. Good zone awareness and reactions. Has a 36-inch vertical. Highly productive. Has special-teams experience. Solid character.

Negatives:

Lacks ideal height. Has to get stronger — managed only 16 reps of 225 pounds on bench press at the Combine. Average eyes and instincts. Pedestrian speed. Tight hips. Slips off tackles. Is not stout at the point of attack — gets outmuscled by lead blockers and knocked around inside. Slipped three times in Combine drills and ran out of his shoe once (although still finished the drill without it). Recorded the worst 20-yard shuttle times (4.39) of any ILB at the Combine.

Summary:

Adequately sized, productive linebacker who does not stand out athletically, nor does he play a physical brand. Best chance to stick will be as a 4-3 backup and special-teams contributor.
