Threw for more than 8,000 yards and 83 touchdowns as a Florida prep, also playing basketball. Worked as the scout team’s quarterback while redshirting in 2007. Was arrested and suspended twice during his redshirt season and once for underage drinking in March ’08. Saw action in eight games in ’08, making three starts, completing 65-of-122 pass attempts (53.3 percent) for 832 yards, six touchdowns and eight interceptions. Also rushed 70 times for 198 yards (2.8-yard average) and two touchdowns. Started all 13 games in ’09, throwing 239-432-2,862-17-10 (55.3) and rushing 120-186-4 (1.5). Threw for 224-349-3,059-20-14 (64.2) in 14 starts in ’10 with 105-222-6 (2.1) on the ground. Was benched against Auburn after fumbling twice trying to fight for extra yards in the fourth quarter on consecutive possessions, both leading to Auburn TDs that erased a six-point lead and cost his team the game. Was suspended for the first week of spring practice in ’11 for violating team rules during the Chick-Fil-A Bowl week and then was suspended for the spring semester for an altercation at a required team event. Graduated in May. Was reinstated in August for displaying what Steve Spurrier called changed behavior. Played in five games (four starts) in ’11 before being dismissed from the team after testing positive for alcohol and violating his previous agreement with the school. Threw for 61-118-844-4-9 (51.7) while adding 34-171-3 (5.0) rushing. Had a 20-14 record in 34 career starts.Positives:
Good size and athletic ability. Quick, compact release. Good arm strength. Stands in against the blitz. Can make plays moving to his right. Physical runner — will lower his shoulder to move the chains. Tough and competitive. Has moxie and is respected by teammates. Beat No. 1 Alabama his junior season.Negatives:
Immature and irresponsible. Marginal football character, poor work ethic and practice habits. Carries himself like a high school big man on campus and is only interested in game days. Inconsistent accuracy. Locks on to receivers and forces throws. Career 47-41 TD-interception ratio. Played poorly in bowl games. Was benched and suspended multiple times at South Carolina and fumbled away his second chances. Has a history of alcohol, drug and behavior incidents, and stability needs to be scrutinized.Summary:
Physically talented quarterback with questionable personality traits and rejectable football character who exhibited poor judgment on and off the field before his dismissal. Remains a prospect because of his toughness, moxie and flashes of effectiveness, but he will have to do a 180 in terms of focus, dependability, discipline and coachability to be worth investing time and effort in. Best chance to succeed will be in a high-percentage, rhythm passing game under a demanding positional coach, but talent might not be worth the headaches.
