Also participated in basketball and track as an Alabama prep. Was one of only three true freshmen to see action in 2008, appearing in all 13 games as a backup safety and recording 11-0-0 with a fumble recovered in the endzone in the Music City Bowl. Started 10-of-12 games in which he played at free safety in ’09, posting 84-2-0 with 4 1⁄2 tackles for loss and one forced fumble. Suffered a torn ligament in his right thumb against Mississippi State and underwent surgery, limiting his action the next two weeks against Rice and Mississippi. Led the team in tackles in ’10 after recording 99-5-0 with seven tackles for loss and 1 1/2 sacks in 12 starts at free safety. In ’11, started all 13 games at strong safety and logged 63-3-1 with 6 1⁄2 tackles for loss and two sacks.Positives:
Looks the part with terrific size and a long, muscular build. Demonstrated strength and explosion at the Combine — bench-pressed 225 pounds 22 times (tops among strong safeties), posted a 381⁄2-inch vertical leap and broad jumped 10 feet 8 inches. Runs well — covers ground with gaping strides and can really turn it on in chase mode. Flashes ball skills. Tough, durable, three-year starter.Negatives:
Does not play to measurables. Average instincts and anticipation (limits range). Takes some questionable angles in pursuit and gets hung up in traffic. Soft-shouldered in run support. Inconsistent tackler — does not arrive under control or square up ballcarriers and leaks yards. Pedals tall and hip stiffness shows in transition.Summary:
Straight-linish, see-and-go reactor lacking starter-caliber instincts and tackling ability. Is not as dependable or impactful as his measurables suggest. Raw size and speed give him a chance to convince a team he’s worth developing, but will have to prove his mettle on special teams.
