The North Carolina prep redshirted in 2007. Saw action in seven contests in ’08. Appeared in 10 contests in ’09, making the first five starts of his career. Started all 11 games at guard in ’10 and helped the Phoenix finish second nationally in passing offense (322.36 yards per game). In ’11, made three starts at right guard before fracturing his right foot and missing the rest of the season. Team captain.Positives:
Good size — thickly built and has big hands. Very strong — squats 750 pounds. Solid base. Generally plays on his feet. Functional foot quickness in short area. Strong hands and grip. Packs a punch on contact. Likes to play and it shows — plays with an aggressive, nasty temperament. Tough and durable. Intelligent.Negatives:
Has short arms. Heavy-legged mover (short stepper). Limited blocking range — struggles reaching the perimeter and is slow cutting off linebackers. Can do a better job dropping anchor in pass protection (gets away with relying on his hands and upper-body strength vs. marginal competition). At times gets lax and opens the gate. Is immature and can be a loose cannon. Character needs to be investigated.Summary:
Thick-bodied, short-armed, physical, small-school guard whose senior season was mostly wiped out because of injury. Projects best as a short-area center in the pros, and will have to prove he’s versatile and dependable to earn a roster spot.
