Last name is pronounced “REEF.” Also lettered in wrestling, golf and track. Was named the South Dakota Gatorade Player of the Year after being an all-state selection as a defensive end and tight end. In July 2008, was arrested for public intoxication and interference with official acts after the incoming freshman led eight officers on a 20-minute chase on foot through town. Redshirted in ’08. Started 11-of-13 games in ’09, making three starts at left tackle, seven at left guard and the season finale at right tackle. Made all 13 starts at left tackle in ’10. The first-team All-Big Ten selection started all 13 games at left tackle in ’11.Positives:
Outstanding size. Very controlled mover with easy lateral agility and movement skill. Plays with very good balance, body control and knee bend — can slide, adjust and recover. Very proficient pass protector — good base and core anchor strength to stop a charge. Active hands. Mirrors speed rushers and can run them wide of the pocket once he engages. Quick to hook and seal and outmaneuver rushers at the snap. Is agile working to the second level and can adjust and wall off linebackers with ease. Good eyes and awareness.Negatives:
Average arm length. Too monotone in his movement. Tight-crotched — does not generate a lot of distance in his kick slide or easily swivel his hips, allowing some inside pressure. Lacks pop and power in his body — not quick-hipped or explosive. Occasionally will set tall, negating some of his recovery quickness. Not a physical, aggressive run blocker and can improve finishing strength.Summary:
Athletic college left tackle lacking ideal arm length for the left side in the pros and might be best on the right side or even kicking to guard. However, he excels in pass protection enough to factor on either edge and, similar to Tennessee Titans Pro Bowl OLT Michael Roos, could outmaneuver speed rushers with patience, anticipation and efficient angles.
