His father, Riki Ellison, played linebacker for four seasons at USC and then in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers (1983-89) and Los Angeles Raiders (1990-92). Rhett played linebacker and tight end as a California prep and redshirted in 2007. Served as a backup tight end in ’08, appearing in nine games with two starts at fullback and posted four catches for 58 yards (14.5-yard average) and no touchdowns. Broke his right foot prior to Week Four and missed the next four games. Played in all 13 games (four starts) in ’09, grabbing 6-41-1 (6.8). Missed spring ’10 practice with mononucleosis. Started all 13 games in the fall and hauled in 21-239-3 (11.4). Recorded 22-133-2 (6.0) and blocked a field goal in 12 starts at fullback in ’11. Team captain has graduated and is working on his master’s degree.Positives:
Large hands. Versatile — lined up everywhere, was used as a motion player and played fullback. Aggressive, competitive blocker — good balance, bend and hand placement in pass protection and has strong, active hands to sustain. Understands angles and works to the second level where he shows effort and body control to block in space. Gets into routes with urgency and is a reliable short receiver. Has toughness to go over the middle and take a hit. Core special-teams player. Solid personal and football character. Has NFL bloodlines.Negatives:
Lacks ideal bulk strength. Average athletic ability, strength and explosion. Is not a seam stretcher. Tight in the hips. Could stand to sharpen his route running. Limited elusiveness after the catch. Does not play with power or violence.Summary:
Smart, hardworking competitor with a balanced skill set to line up in a variety of spots and contribute on special teams. Is versatile and pedigreed and can offer roster flexibility. Will outplay other tight ends drafted ahead of him.
