The Miami-area prep led Dade County with eight interceptions as a senior in addition to playing wide receiver and returning kicks. Also competed in track. Played in 11 games as a true freshman in 2009, starting the final three games of the season at cornerback, and recorded 29 tackles, zero pass breakups and two interceptions. Missed the South Florida game with an undisclosed injury. In ’10, he posted 92-3-1 with four tackles for loss and one forced fumble in 13 starts at free safety. Fractured his jaw and required surgery during fall camp in ’11. Started 10 games at free safety and led the team in tackles and interceptions with 82-3-6 with 4 1⁄2 tackles for loss and one forced fumble. Did not play in the final two games after being suspended for one year for violating athletic department policy. Did not participate in Combine shuttle drills (left ankle).Positives:
Nice length and large hands. Fine range and ball skills — can high-point and has soft hands to pluck interceptions off his frame. Darts downhill and shows closing burst when he sees it. Plays faster than his timed speed. Has special-teams experience.Negatives:
Adequate size — needs to bulk up. Below-average speed. High, choppy pedal. Shows some stiffness in transition. Limited tackle strength — does not bring his feet or explode through his hips and leaks yards after contact. Struggles to break down — lower-body stiffness shows in space. Bench-pressed 225 pounds only 14 times, lowest among FS prospects at Combine. Character needs to be investigated.Summary:
High-cut, straight-linish, inconsistent free safety with range and ball skills to fit in a cover-2 defense, though he needs to be heavier on contact. Character concerns could affect his draft standing.
