Notes: Spent the first three years of his prep career in Georgia before moving to Texas for his senior campaign where he was ranked among the top 20 pro-style quarterbacks. Began his collegiate career at Nebraska, where he redshirted in 2007. Was charged with obstructing government operations in December — was intoxicated and used a false name to enter a residence hall. According to police, when a student official tried to prevent Witt from entering, he pushed and threatened the student before running away from a police officer. Charge was ultimately dismissed upon completion of a diversion program. Saw action in five games in ’08, completing 6-of-8 passes for 48 yards (75 percent) with zero touchdowns and no interceptions. Transferred to Yale for the ’09 season and played in eight games (six starts) with 138-240-1,449-8-11 (57.3). In February ’10, was charged with third-degree criminal trespass after an altercation when he wasn’t allowed in a nightclub (ultimately paid a fine on a lesser, public disturbance charge). On the season, led the Ivy League in passing yards, completions and attempts after throwing for 212-351-2,216-12-12 (60.4) in nine starts. Was suspended for the Fordham game by the NCAA for accepting a free NFL ticket. Started all 10 games in ’11 and recorded 199-321-2,368-17-14 (62.0). Holds most of the Bulldogs’ career passing records, including 549 completions, 913 attempts and 6,033 yards. Had a 12-13 record in 25 career starts. Was considered for the Rhodes Scholarship, but his candidacy reportedly was suspended after the Rhodes Trust learned through unofficial channels that a fellow student had accused Witt of sexual assault, though it was never reported to police or filed as a complaint to Yale.
Positives:Good size and durability. Highly intelligent. Has a mind for the game — studies, prepares and understands concepts. Knows the playbook and commands the offense. Quick setup and short-armed release. Good short-to-intermediate accuracy. Nice touch on finesse throws. Experienced, three-year starter.
Negatives:Average arm strength. Inconsistent spiral. Rattled by pressure — mechanics and judgment wane when the pocket shrinks. Thinks he’s better than he is and could rub teammates the wrong way. Has two minor arrests and sexual-assault accusation and character need to be evaluated carefully.
Summary:A former Rhodes Scholar candidate and former BCS recruit, Witt is a cerebral rhythm passer who requires a clean pocket to function efficiently. Has the mental acuity to compete for a No. 3 job.
