Was a highly recruited TE prospect as a Florida prep after grabbing 75 passes for 1,440 yard and 21 touchdowns in addition to playing as a defensive end. Earned distinction in 2009 after grabbing 23 passes for 374 yards (16.3-yard average) and three touchdowns in 13 games (three starts). In ’10, he recorded 26-422-2 (16.2) in 13 games (12 starts — did not start vs. Arkansas). In ’11, he started all 14 games and caught 45-574-5 (12.8). Finished his career as Georgia’s top receiving tight end with 1,370 yards. Team captain as a junior. Arrested by Athens-Clarke County police in early morning hours of March 9 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Car he was driving was stopped in road. When police officer pulled up to see if car was disabled, Charles began to drive away. He submitted to sobriety tests and blew .095 blood-alcohol level. Booked into jail for an hour before being released on $1,750 bond.Positives:
Is shredded with muscle and looks like he has been weaned on a weight-lifting machine. Plays bigger than his size and will climb defenders — hits with explosion. Plays hard and competes. Can separate from man coverage, stretch the seam and create big plays downfield. Shows urgency and some creativity after the catch, spinning off contact and sifting through trash. Aggressive blocker — competes and seeks to finish blocks. Bench-pressed 225 pounds 35 times, best among all tight ends at the Combine. Versatile and can line up all over the field in multiple spots. Charismatic, vocal leader.Negatives:
Lacks ideal height and body length and can stand to put on a few more pounds. Has some tightness in his hips and struggles adjusting to badly thrown balls high and low — can’t bail out a bad quarterback. Too often slows to catch. Not a savvy route runner. Needed to be shown how to line up before gauntlet drill at the Combine and ran up the field the wrong way before catching his final pass.Summary:
A strong, explosive, physical, all-around tight end with good intangibles. Can contribute readily on all downs and factor as a mismatch piece with a creative coordinator.
