Highly recruited cornerback-running back out of California. Missed four games as a high school junior (ankle). Played all 13 games as a true freshman in 2007, starting the final nine, and recorded 33 tackles, six pass breakups and one interception. Started all 12 games in ’08, notching 49-7-2 with a tackle for loss. Had surgery to repair a torn right labrum in December. In ’09, managed 4-1-1 with a tackle for loss in four games (two starts) before a sprained left MCL sidelined him the rest of the season. Returned to start all 12 games in ’10 when he totaled 52-7-3 with three tackles for loss. Tore his left ACL during ’11 spring practice and did not see any game action in the fall. Returned 17 career kickoffs for 321 yards (29.2-yard average) and two TDs. Two-time team captain has earned his undergraduate degree. Did not run at the Combine because of knee injury.Positives:
Big, strong and athletic. Has press strength — pumped 225 pounds 25 times at the Combine, equivalent to more than twice his weight and better than any other cornerback. Quick feet and loose hips to shadow in man coverage. Good balance and body control. Changes direction efficiently. Drives on throws and shows closing burst. Zone aware. Good range and ball skills (soft hands to intercept). Responsible in run support and is a willing tackler. Smooth acceleration and nice vision as a kickoff returner. Plays with awareness and confidence. Solid character — well-respected, mature and coachable. Energetic, upbeat locker-room presence.Negatives:
Durability is an issue — missed almost two full seasons because of injuries. Tends to clutch and grab. Rises in his pedal, restricting transitional quickness. Can do a better job tracking, locating and getting his head around with his back to the ball. Can be slow reacting in zone. Could stand to improve hand use to disengage on the edge. Lacks experience lining up inside.Summary:
Athletic, tough, competitive, injury-prone, man-cover corner who missed his senior season while nursing a torn ACL injury. If he can return to full strength, he possesses starter-caliber ability and offers added value as a kickoff returner. However, durability remains a pressing concern.
