The Florida prep did not play in any games in 2007. Saw action in 11 games in ’08, primarily on special teams, and caught four passes for 70 yards (17.5-yard average) and one touchdown. Had an injury-plagued season in ’09, seeing action in only four games with two starts (Minnesota and Maine) and posted 4-55-0 (13.8). Injured his left shoulder (also required surgery) against Minnesota and missed the Penn State game before suffering a season-ending left knee injury vs. South Florida. Played in all 13 games in ’10, making three starts in the two-TE formation, and grabbed 33-365-1 (11.1). Made all 12 starts at tight end in ’11 and led the team in receiving touchdowns with 51-537-7 (10.5).Positives:
Good athletic ability and play speed — runs well enough to stretch the seam. Solid route runner — sinks his hips subtly and squares off patterns. Nice awareness — gets his head around quickly and makes himself available to the quarterback. Good balance and body control. Adjusts to throws and has soft hands to catch outside his frame. Good leaping ability. Made strides as a blocker. Has played as a “move” tight end and in-line player. Works hard in the weight room and wants to improve.Negatives:
Needs to bulk up his physique. Average flexibility to avoid getting jammed up. Has some buildup. Inconsistent blocker because of strength deficiency — struggles to sustain and gets manhandled by bigger, stronger defensive ends. Straight-linish with limited elusiveness after the catch.Summary:
Adequate-sized, athletic, confident, competitive receiving tight end who came into his own in Doug Marrone’s and Nathaniel Hackett’s pro-style offense and elevated his stock as a senior. Blocking will never be his calling card, but he can bring value on the move in the receiving game.
