Goes by his middle name. His father, Marvin Kendricks, was UCLA’s leading rusher in 1970 and ’71. Was also a running back as a California prep. Appeared in all 13 games in 2008 as a reserve linebacker and special-teams player, recording 15 tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack with a blocked kick. Saw action in all 13 contests in ’09 — making three starts at inside linebacker and five at outside ’backer — and collected 72-6-1 with three pass breakups, a 68-yard interception return for a touchdown and one forced fumble. Put off surgery to repair torn labrum in left shoulder until after the season and sat out ’10 spring practice. In the fall, started all 13 games at an OLB spot and posted 66-15-81⁄2 with one interception. Named the Pac-12’s Defensive Player of the Year in ’11 after piling up 107-141⁄2-3 with two pass breakups and two interceptions in 13 games (11 starts). Both missed starts were punishments for violating team rules and underwent surgery on a broken left thumb after the Utah contest but didn’t miss any games.Positives:
Built low to the ground and is muscular and well-proportioned. Punctuated his standing at the Combine — ran in the 4.4s, posted a 391⁄2-inch vertical leap, broad-jumped 10 feet, 7 inches (paced linebackers in all three) and clocked 4.19 seconds in the short shuttle. Explosive movement skills and striking ability — drives through contact and plays big. Has take-on strength and strong hands to control/disengage. Can drop into zone. Flashes pass-rush ability. Has a revved up motor and an aggressive playing temperament. Consistent, productive three-year starter. Outstanding personal and football character — loves football and is well-respected. Good pedigree.Negatives:
Lacks ideal height and arm length. Shows some tightness in his hips when required to quickly break down or redirect. Sucked up by play-action. Average power as a pass rusher/blitzer to cave the pocket (more of an effort/leverage rusher). Limited man-cover experience and production as a pass defender. Not a vocal, on-field leader. Was dinged up a bit, and durability could be an issue given his playing style.Summary:
A fast, physical, powerful, high-motor stalwart, Kendricks smells blood in the water, hits with thump and has a desirable makeup. Is a scheme-versatile, seek-and-destroy ’backer who stands out on tape and could make an impact readily.
