Long Beach, Calif. product who spent two seasons at Cerritos College (Calif.) — totaled 31 receptions for 305 yards (9.8-yard average) and two touchdowns in 2008 (10 games) and 38-728-1 (19.2) in ’09 (11 games). With the Sun Devils in ’10, started 9-of-12 games and caught 36-442-6 (12.3). Played through a torn labrum and separated AC joint in his right shoulder that required surgery in December and sidelined him for ’11 spring practice. In the fall, started 12-of-13 games at the “Z” receiver (except Washington State) and hauled in 36-455-3 (12.6). Only fumbled once the past two years.Positives:
Impressive looking body — has very long arms and a big catching radius. Natural catcher — has soft hands and good ball reactions to pluck away from his frame. Concentrates in traffic and can make difficult and contested grabs. Can slip the jam. Good balance and body control. Improved route runner. Good zone and field awareness. Does not go down easy. Gives effort as a blocker. Is tough and will play through pain. Confident and competitive. Hardworking and coachable. Upbeat locker-room presence. Has some swagger.Negatives:
Not sudden. Builds to below-average speed — cannot separate vertically. Dull twitch — struggles to separate from man coverage. Unrefined route runner. Too many catches are contested. Not creative or elusive after the catch. Struggles to sustain and finish as a blocker. Still learning some of the finer mental points of the position. Average production.Summary:
More fluid than sudden, Willie is a big, tough, tight-skinned, long-armed possession receiver and junior-college product with impressive ball skills, though he lacks an explosive element. Stopwatch does not do him any favors, but he could develop into a dependable No. 4, zone-beating chain mover.
