Also played basketball as a North Carolina prep. Spent the 2008 and ’09 seasons playing for Itawamba Community College in Mississippi, where he saw action at right and left tackle and missed one game with a shoulder injury. Transferred to Southern Miss for the ’10 campaign and played in all 13 games with six starts at left tackle, including the final five. Suffered a sprained right ankle in his first career start against Prairie View A&M. Was a first-team Conference USA selection in ’11 after starting 14 games at left tackle. Team captain.Positives:
Exceptional size with vines for arms and good overall mass. Good weight-room strength and functional play strength. Can create a push when he latches on. Solid anchor. Effective cut blocker.Negatives:
Bad-bodied — high-hipped and carries too much fleshy weight. Plodding grunter — strains to move and appears very stiff in the hips. Spends too much time on the ground. Struggles to adjust to moving targets or initiate contact on the second level. Raw technician. Falls off blocks. Works predominantly out of a two-point stance in a pass-first offense.Summary:
Worked hard to shed weight as a senior, dropping 30 pounds and showed fairly well at the East-West Shrine Game, but has limited value as a right tackle only in the pros.
