Notes: Also played basketball as a prep in Nevada, where he caught 58 passes for 1,631 yards (28.1-yard average) and 25 touchdowns to pace the state’s receivers. As a true freshman in 2008, tallied seven receptions for 88 yards (12.6-yard average) and a touchdown in 13 games (three starts). Played all 13 games in ’09, starting five, and caught 45-582-9 (12.9). Despite a concussion in August ’10 and a turf toe injury to his left foot in September, started 12-of-13 games and racked up 82-1,233-11 (15.0). Made 11 starts and hauled in 75-956-11 (12.7) in ’11. Missed the Oklahoma State game after having an appendectomy earlier in the week. Has three career fumbles. Had 32 career receiving TDs to establish the school record.
Positives:Terrific size and big hands. Strides fluidly and accelerates well for a big receiver. Good ball reactions and body control. Snatches throws away from his body and can make difficult catches. Tracks well over his shoulder. Has a 38-inch vertical leap. Competitive after the catch.
Negatives:Relatively short arms. Can be jammed up at the line. Average speed and burst. Shows some tightness in his hips and is straight-linish. Needs to become a more deceptive route runner. Not explosive in and out of breaks. Lets some throws into his body. Effort and physicality as a blocker are lacking. Intermittent intensity. Could be distracted away from the game.
Summary:Big, linear “X” receiver with size, hands and enough run-after-catch ability to appeal to West Coast offenses, though his ceiling is limited by average speed and suddenness. Strong candidate to be overdrafted.
