The Florida prep saw action in all 13 games, starting the final 11 games as a true freshman in 2009. Recorded 69 tackles, eight passes broken up and six interceptions with one tackle for loss, including a 24-yard interception return for a touchdown. Started 13 games at cornerback in ’10 and managed 59-13-2 with half a tackle for loss. Was also the main punt returner with 20 returns for 304 yards (15.2) and zero touchdowns and returned a fumble 56 yards against UAB for a score. Did not play against North Carolina State after suffering a thigh contusion. In 12 starts in ’11, led the team in passes broken up for the second consecutive season after recording 48-15-2 with one forced fumble. Began the season as the punt returner but was replaced for gambling on returns too much and finished with 7-51-0 (7.3).Positives:
Quick-footed, explosive athlete with rare timed speed — was the fastest player at the Combine, paced cornerbacks in the broad jump (11 feet 1 inches) and 3-cone drill (6.55 seconds), posted a 381⁄2-inch vertical leap and clocked 3.97 seconds in the short shuttle. Fluid movement skills. Flips his hips and keeps pace vertically. Alert in zone. Very good ball production. Drives on throws and times pass breakups. Shows burst to recover. Willing wrap tackler. Competed well against former Georgia star WR A.J. Green as a sophomore. Has worked as a “gunner.”Negatives:
Average length. Does not always play to timed speed. Needs to get functionally stronger. Was not deployed in press coverage very often. Pedals a bit upright, restricting his transitional quickness. Can plant and drive more efficiently (wastes a step in transition). Squats on routes and gambles (susceptible to double moves). Limited experience vs. elite receivers. Inconsistent hands. Shaky fielding punts — was replaced as a junior after putting the ball on the ground multiple times. Immature.Summary:
Small-framed, speedy corner with suddenness, ball skills and tackling ability to develop into a No. 2 corner. Is most comfortable in off coverage or zone where he can jump routes and react to plays in front of him, and would boost his value by proving he can play inside and field punts competently. Draft status could ascend after private workouts.
