Notes:

Last name is pronounced “mass-a-kwa” and he is a native of Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. Has two cousins currently playing in the NFL — Minnesota Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe and Cleveland Browns WR Mohamed Massaquoi. Prepped in Georgia. Attended Butler County (Kan.) Community College and greyshirted in ’07. Helped lead Butler to the 2008 NJCAA championship after recording 96 tackles, 17 1⁄2 tackles for loss and 20 sacks as a freshman defensive end. Signed with Troy and redshirted in ’09. Started all 13 games at left defensive end for the Trojans in ’10 and posted 76-20 1⁄2-13 1⁄2 with one pass batted down and a forced fumble. Made all 12 starts at DLE spot in ’11, leading the team in tackles for loss and sacks after recording 52-10 1⁄2-6 with two passes batted down and one forced fumble.

Positives:

Has very long arms and big hands — tremendous wing span for his size. Can win with quickness — flexible to bend the edge. Good sack production. Flattens down the line and has closing burst to track down backs from behind. Flashes violence in his hands. Comes from a program that has produced NFL edge rushers. Has upside.

Negatives:

Regressed as a junior. Average instincts — see-and-go reactor. Not tough or physical. Disinterested run defender. Gets outmuscled by tight ends and cannot set the edge. Weight has fluctuated and affected speed and movement skills. Did not dominate mid-major competition. Is immature, and coachability and character need to be looked into.

Summary:

Immature, inconsistent, enigmatic rush end who showed legit pass-rush skills as a sophomore, but bulked up as a junior at cost of play speed. Team that drafts him will have to determine which version it’s getting, and finesse temperament, makeup concerns and uneven performance heighten risk factor. Could be a value selection if he returns to sophomore form.
